![]() ![]() especially after paying over 4k for a computer :/ i can't imagine what else it would be. It is possible that i pulled something too hard when i originally installed the DVD drive when i first received the computer, but i'm pretty careful. i do know that my drives stopped working yesterday (and most of today) when i attempted to resolve the burning issue and took them out to change jumper settings. i think that pulling on the wire disrupts the connection, but can't be entirely for certain. i just can't see why a wire would have its inner metal showing like that and it be normal. since the original purchase of the computer. i'm almost positive that this has been my problem all along. i'm waiting for a return call from him to see if he can replace the wiring. There is not a Mac repair shop where i live, but i do know a certified repair technician who used to work for a repair shop that is now closed. i have little knowledge of any of these hardware/electronic issues outside of the basics. While my hard drives are SATA, my DVD drives are ATAPI. i am hoping that it will work in my computer. I have purchased another DVD drive, a newer Optiarc. But i can't install a new one myself because i can't see where it is connected to the computer because it runs down under the carriage of the drive bay on the other side of the computer. i am almost positive that this connector is defective. There are two rectangular shaped plastic ends, one for the top DVD drive and one for the bottom, just as there are two ribbon cables with longer rectangular ends that fit into the middle of the drives. It does have four wires, but they are all black. The above is from the "About This Mac" Disc Burning screen. Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw, DVD-DAOĭVD-Write: -R, -R DL, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW The firmware on the Optiarc is 1.NB and the firmware on the Pioneer is 1.09. i have the Optiarc DVD RW AD-7170A, factory pre-installed by Apple in the first drive bay, and a Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-112D in the second drive bay installed by me. I am running 10.5.7 on a MacPro Dual-Core 3Ghz machine with 13 GB of RAM. Both of the DVD drives include burning Dual Layer DVD's, CD's, and regular DVD's. However, i also would like to have both drives be equally functional and dependable.ĭid i install the Pioneer DVD burner incorrectly or something? if so, how would i determine this? Any settings that i should know about that i might have overlooked? i have been able to burn a Dual Layer DVD before, but it has always been somewhat unreliable. These problems have been on-going, but more problematic now as i really desire to burn a dual layer DVD. I have owned the computer about three years, give or take, and i installed the second DVD drive the day i got my Mac. Using the information in the "About This Mac" menu all my drives show up and they all say they are Apple supported and none show any errors. ![]() I have fixed permissions, i have also used a defrag program (iDefrag) to defragment my hard drive (i know about the arguments regarding defragmentation, but i figured it wouldn't hurt to try it), i have also checked my hard drives with Disc Utility and with Disk Warrior. Burning tunes to the Pioneer drive appears more risky and tends to result in errors more regularly, that is if iTunes decides to actually burn the disc. It seems to prefer the factory installed Optiarc drive in the first drive bay, even if the latter one is selected. iTunes doesn't seem to like to use the Pioneer drive (located in the second drive bay) to burn tunes to CD (or DVD). ![]() The Optiarc drive that came in my Mac doesn't seem to want to recognize a Dual layer DVD when inserted to burn through use of the Burn Folder, and if i attempt to burn in Toast the Optiarc drive just sits there, and i have to force quit Toast.Ĥ. Seems like it goes half way and then the drive reports an error. i can't burn Dual layer DVD's on either drive either through Toast or through the Mac OS 10.5 burn folder option. DVD's burn better in the Pioneer drive and seem to just sit there if i attempt to burn them on the Optiarc drive.ģ. i do have buffer over run set in toast.Ģ. If i attempt to burn a CD in the Pioneer drive, it will just sit there and i have to force quit Toast or i will get a drive error. Seems like regular CD's that i burn in Toast with music on them to play in my CD player burns fine in the Optiarc drive, but not so fine in the Pioneer drive. i have some strange behavior that i was hoping someone could shed some light on. i have installed a second Pioneer DVD drive in the second bay. When i purchased my Mac Pro it came with an Optiarc DVD drive.
